How Much Does Live Chat Software Cost in 2026? (Real Prices Compared)

SUMMARY
We compared 2026 pricing for 10 live chat tools, worked out what a team like yours would really pay, and flagged the hidden costs to watch for.

Comparing live chat pricing is harder than it should be. One tool charges per agent, another charges one price for your whole team, and a third bills you every time its AI answers a question. So two tools that both say “$29 a month” can leave you with very different bills.

We did the math for you. We went through the pricing pages of 10 live chat tools and worked out what each one would actually cost for three common team sizes with AI included.

Quick answer

  • You can start free. tawk.to, Crisp, Chatwoot, and Tidio all have free plans, but expect limits on chats, features, or AI.
  • Per-agent plans start at around $19 to $55 a month for each person on your team.
  • Flat-rate plans start at around $24 to $79 a month for your whole team.
  • AI is either included in your plan or charged each time it answers, usually $0.99 to $2 per answer.
  • For a 3-person team with AI, costs range from under $100 to over $700 a month, depending mostly on how the tool charges for AI.

How Live Chat Software Is Priced: 3 Common Models

Almost every live chat tool uses one of three pricing models, or a mix of them. Knowing which one you’re looking at matters more than the headline price.

1. Per Agent (or Per Seat)

You pay a set price for each person who answers chats. LiveChat, Zendesk, Intercom, and Chatwoot work this way.

How to work it out: price per agent × number of agents.

This is easy to predict, and fair if everyone on the team answers chats every day. It gets expensive when you have part-timers, managers, or people who only jump in occasionally, because each of them needs a paid seat too.

2.Flat Rate (Per Workspace or Plan)

You pay one price for the whole plan, which includes a set number of users. Crisp, Tidio, and Heyy work this way.

How to work it out: the plan price, as long as your team fits inside it.

This is usually cheaper for small teams, and adding a teammate doesn’t change the bill until you hit the plan’s limit. The catch is the jump to the next plan: when you need one more seat, or more chats, you move up a whole tier.

3. Usage-Based

You pay for what you use: conversations, AI answers, or credits. Most tools now add this on top of one of the models above, especially for AI.

How to work it out: what’s included in your plan, plus the price of each extra unit.

This can be the cheapest option when volume is low. But it’s the hardest to predict, because a busy month means a bigger bill.

How Much Does AI Add to Live Chat Costs?

A few years ago, live chat pricing was mostly about seats. In 2026, AI is where bills grow. Tools charge for it in three different ways, and the difference adds up quickly.

← Scroll to see all columns →
How AI is charged What you pay for Examples
Per resolution Each chat the AI fully resolves without a person Intercom Fin ($0.99 each), Zendesk ($1.50 to $2 each beyond the plan’s allowance)
Per AI conversation Each conversation the AI takes part in Tidio Lyro (plans from $32.50/month for 50 conversations)
Credits included in the plan AI messages drawn from a monthly allowance, with top-ups if you run out Heyy, Crisp, Chatwoot

An example. Say your AI fully answers 300 chats a month.

  • With Intercom Fin, that’s 300 × $0.99 = $297 a month, on top of your seats.
  • With Zendesk Suite Team, each agent’s plan includes 5 resolutions. For a 3-person team, that covers 15, and the other 285 cost $1.50 to $2 each: about $430 to $570 a month on top of seats.
  • With a credit-based plan, it depends on how many credits each chat uses and how many your plan includes. On some plans, 300 AI-answered chats fit inside the monthly allowance at no extra cost.

Per-resolution pricing has one advantage: you only pay when the AI actually solves the problem. Credit-based pricing is easier to budget for, because most of the cost is already in your plan price.

Live Chat Software Prices Compared

Here are the entry prices for 10 popular tools, taken from each vendor’s own pricing page. Where a vendor shows both, we’ve listed the annual-billing price, since that’s what most pricing pages lead with.

Tool Pricing model Free plan Paid plans from AI pricing Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp
Heyy Flat rate, users included No (7-day trial) $49/month (1 user); $149/month (5 users) AI Employee included; 1,000 credits/month on Hobby, $20 per 1,000 extra All three, on every plan
tawk.to Free, paid add-ons Yes Add-ons from $29/month AI Assist from $29/month Messaging channels in beta
Tidio Flat rate + usage Yes, 50 conversations $24.17/month Lyro from $32.50/month All three, on every plan
Crisp Flat rate per workspace Yes, 2 seats $45/month (4 seats) AI credits included on paid plans Instagram and WhatsApp from $95/month
LiveChat Per agent No (14-day trial) $19/agent/month 10 AI resolutions/month included; $49.50 per 50 extra Messenger on every plan; others not clearly listed
Intercom Per seat + usage No $29/seat/month (billed monthly) Fin at $0.99 per outcome All three (channels)
Zendesk Per agent + usage No (14-day trial) $55/agent/month (Suite Team) 5 resolutions/agent included; then $1.50 to $2 each All three, on Suite plans
Chatwoot Per agent Yes, 2 agents $19/agent/month 300 credits/month on Startups, 1 per AI reply; $20 per 1,000 extra All three, on paid plans
respond.io Per plan, priced by monthly active contacts No (7-day trial) $79/month (Starter, 5 users) 5,000 AI credits on Starter; AI Agents from Growth ($159/month) All three
Chatbase Per plan + message credits No (7-day trial) $32/month (Hobby, 2 members) 700 credits/month on Hobby; $40 per 1,000 extra All three, on every plan

Two things to keep in mind when you read this table. A lower entry price doesn’t mean a lower bill, because what’s included varies so much. And the price you see is usually for annual billing. Paying monthly often costs 20% or more extra: LiveChat is $25 instead of $19, and Zendesk is $69 instead of $55.

How Much Does Live Chat Cost for Your Team? (3 Examples)

You only need three numbers to get a realistic estimate.

  1. How many people answer chats. On per-agent tools, multiply this by the seat price. On flat-rate tools, find the cheapest plan that includes this many users.
  2. How many chats you get, and how many AI could answer. This sets your AI cost: resolutions × price, or whether your credits cover it.
  3. Which channels you need. If you want Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp in the same inbox as your website chat, check which plan includes them.

To show how that plays out, we ran the same three situations through every tool:

The three scenarios

Tool Solo owner Small team Growing team
Heyy $49 (Hobby) $149 (Pro) $149 (Pro)
Crisp $45 to $95 $95 (Essentials) $95 to $295 (Messenger not listed)
Chatwoot $19 $77 $135
Chatbase $120 (Standard) $120 (Standard) $400 (Pro)
respond.io $159 (Growth) $159 (Growth) $159 (Growth)
LiveChat $118 $354 $689 (Instagram and WhatsApp not clearly listed)
Intercom $128 $384 $739
Zendesk $245 $735 $1,425
Tidio $24.17 + Lyro $49.17+ + Lyro Custom
tawk.to Free + AI Assist from $29 Free + AI Assist from $29 Social channels still in beta

How we worked these out

  • Heyy: the most affordable plan with enough users. Each chat uses 1 credit to start an automation, plus 3 credits for AI replies when the AI answers it. That fits inside Hobby’s 1,000 credits for the solo owner and Pro’s 6,000 for both teams.
  • Crisp: Mini includes about 90 AI-handled conversations, Essentials about 450, and Plus about 1,350. WhatsApp starts on Essentials.
  • Chatwoot: Startups at $19 per agent. Each AI reply uses 1 credit, and Startups includes 300 credits a month. Extra credits cost $20 per 1,000, which we’ve rounded up to whole packs of 1,000.
  • Chatbase: the helpdesk inbox, where your team can reply to customers, starts on Standard (120/monthbilledannually,3members,4,000messagecredits).Hobby(32) is cheaper but doesn’t list the inbox. The growing team needs 5 members, which means Pro ($400/month billed annually).
  • respond.io: Growth, the first plan with AI Agents, at 159/monthbilledyearly(199 monthly) for up to 1,000 monthly active contacts, 10 users, and 10,000 AI credits. Starter ($79) includes 5,000 AI credits but not AI Agents.
  • LiveChat: Essential at $19 per agent, with 10 AI resolutions included and extras at $49.50 per 50.
  • Intercom: Essential at $29 per seat (billed monthly), plus $0.99 for each chat Fin resolves.
  • Zendesk: Suite Team at $55 per agent, with 5 AI resolutions per agent included and extras at the $2 pay-as-you-go rate. Committing to a volume brings that down to $1.50.
  • Tidio: Starter covers 100 human-answered conversations and Growth starts at 250. Lyro is priced by monthly AI conversation volume, and Tidio’s page only lists the 50-conversation price, so we couldn’t total it.
  • WhatsApp message fees aren’t included for any tool. Meta charges them, not the chat tool, so they’re the same whichever tool you pick. More on that below.

The biggest difference isn’t the seat price. It’s how AI is charged. Per-resolution pricing is fair at low volume, but at 300 or 600 AI-answered chats a month, it can cost more than the seats themselves.

Free vs Paid Live Chat and the Hidden Costs to Watch For

Free live chat is genuinely good enough for some businesses. If one person answers a handful of chats a day and doesn’t need AI, a free plan from tawk.to, Crisp, or Chatwoot will do the job.

Paid plans start to make sense when chats arrive outside working hours, when more than two or three people need to reply, or when customers message you on WhatsApp and Instagram as well as your website. (We compare the free options in more detail in our guide to tawk.to alternatives.)

Whichever you choose, the plan price is rarely the whole bill. These are the costs that most often catch businesses out:

  • Monthly vs annual billing. Most pricing pages lead with the annual price. Paying monthly usually costs 20% or more extra.
  • AI beyond your allowance. Whether it’s resolutions, conversations, or credits, check what happens when you go over. This is where bills grow fastest.
  • Conversation caps. Some plans limit how many chats you can handle before you have to upgrade. On Tidio, for example, Starter covers 100 human-answered conversations a month.
  • Seats for occasional users. On per-agent plans, a manager who checks in once a week still needs a paid seat.
  • Branding removal. Free and entry plans often show the vendor’s name on your widget. Removing it can be a paid add-on: $29 a month on tawk.to, for example.
  • Social channel costs. Instagram and Messenger come at no extra cost from Meta, but check which plan includes them. WhatsApp is different: if you use the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges for messages on top of your chat tool, including a per-message fee for replies inside the 24-hour service window from October 1, 2026. Rates vary by country, and messages customers send you are free.
  • Setup time. Every tool takes time to set up: connecting channels, writing saved replies, and training the AI on your business. Bigger platforms usually take longer.

Live Chat Pricing FAQs

1. How much does live chat software cost per month?

Paid plans start at about $19 to $55 per agent, or $24 to $79 a month for a flat-rate plan that covers your whole team. Once you add AI, a 3-person team typically pays anywhere from under $100 to over $700 a month, depending on how the tool charges for AI.

2. How much does live chat cost per agent?

Entry-level per-agent plans in 2026 range from $19 a month (LiveChat, Chatwoot) to $55 a month (Zendesk Suite Team), with annual billing. Paying monthly usually costs more.

3. Is there free live chat software?

Yes. tawk.to, Crisp, Chatwoot, and Tidio all have free plans. Each has limits, such as the number of agents, chats, or features, and most charge extra for AI.

4. Why is AI charged separately?

AI costs the vendor more each time it’s used, so many tools charge per answer or per resolution instead of building it into the seat price. Some, like Heyy and Crisp, include a monthly AI allowance in the plan and charge only if you go over it.

5. Does live chat software include Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp?

Many do. Heyy, Tidio, Chatbase, Intercom, Zendesk, respond.io, and Chatwoot bring Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp into the same inbox as website chat, though some only on paid or higher plans. Others, like tawk.to, are still adding them. If you use WhatsApp, Meta charges its own message fees on top.

Choosing Live Chat Software That Fits Your Budget

The cheapest-looking price is rarely the cheapest bill. Before you choose, count the people who’ll answer chats, estimate how many chats AI could handle, and decide which channels you need. Then run those numbers through each tool’s pricing, not just the headline figure.

If you want one price that covers your team, your channels, and an AI Employee, Heyy is worth a look.
