WhatsApp Marketing Statistics: Open Rates, Response Rates & ROI (2026)

SUMMARY
Most WhatsApp statistics pages repeat numbers nobody can trace. Here are the WhatsApp marketing statistics for 2026 that link to their original sources, from users and open rates to pricing, plus the popular figures we couldn’t verify.

Most WhatsApp statistics pages quote the same numbers: a 98% open rate, 45–60% click-through rates, and 80% of messages read within five minutes. Very few link to where those numbers came from, and when you follow the trail, there’s usually no study at the end of it. In fact, one 2026 benchmark of 382 brands calls the 98% figure “folklore.”

So we built this page differently. Every statistic below links to its original source, mostly Meta’s own research, earnings calls and developer documentation, along with the date it was published. Where a popular number can’t be traced, we say so.

How we checked these statistics

We only included a statistic if we could find where it was first published, who published it, and when. If a figure came from a company with a product to sell, including Meta, we say so. Company case studies are labelled as single examples, not averages. All figures were last checked on October 12, 2026.

WhatsApp usage statistics

Before looking at how people use WhatsApp with businesses, it helps to know how big the audience is. These figures show how many people use WhatsApp, and how much.

1. WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly users. Mark Zuckerberg shared the figure on Meta’s first-quarter 2025 earnings call on April 30, 2025 (transcript). It’s the latest official count Meta has given.

2. 1.5 billion people use the WhatsApp Updates tab every day. The Updates tab is where Status and Channels live. Meta shared the figure on June 16, 2025, when it announced ads in Status, promoted channels, and paid channel subscriptions.

3. WhatsApp peaked at 30 million messages per second during the 2026 World Cup Final. Zuckerberg called it “an all-time messaging record” on Meta’s Q2 2026 earnings call on July 29, 2026.

4. The WhatsApp Business app passed 200 million monthly active users in 2023, up from 50 million in 2020 (TechCrunch, June 27, 2023). Meta hasn’t published a newer figure, so treat this as a floor, not a current count.

How people message businesses

These figures come from Meta’s 2026 Consumer Report on business messaging. Kantar surveyed 11,056 online adults aged 18 to 64 across 22 markets, including the US, UK, India, Brazil, Germany, and Indonesia, between April and September 2025. Meta commissioned the study, so it’s fair to read it as Meta making the case for its own product. But the method is published, which is more than most WhatsApp statistics can say.

What this means for businesses: messaging is no longer just a support channel. Around three in four people say they’re more likely to buy from a business they can message, and more likely to trust it. So a customer who messages you is often one step away from buying, and a reply that comes too late can lose the sale.

It also changes how you can handle those messages. Two in three people (67.7%) find an AI reply helpful, even though fewer than half (42.9%) expect AI to improve their experience. Customers care more about getting a quick, useful answer than about who, or what, sends it. A business that uses AI to answer common questions instantly, and hands the rest to a person, can give customers what they want without hiring a team to reply around the clock.

WhatsApp business growth statistics

Meta reports on business messaging every quarter, and these figures show where the channel is heading.

5. People have more than 1 billion active chat threads with business accounts every day, across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Zuckerberg shared the figure on Meta’s Q3 2025 earnings call in October 2025 (transcript).

6. Revenue from click-to-WhatsApp ads grew 60% year over year in Q3 2025. These are ads that open a WhatsApp chat instead of a website. CFO Susan Li shared the figure on the same call (transcript).

7. Meta’s “other revenue” passed $1 billion in a single quarter for the first time in Q2 2026, up 73% year over year. Li said the growth was “driven primarily by WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions revenue” (Q2 2026 call, July 29, 2026). Businesses are paying to message customers on WhatsApp in growing numbers.

8. More than 1 million businesses use Meta Business Agent, Meta’s own AI for answering customers on WhatsApp and Messenger, which launched globally in June 2026 (Q2 2026 call).

9. One car rental company reported a 44% rise in daily WhatsApp bookings after adding an AI agent. Meta shared the example of Movida, one of Brazil’s largest car rental companies, on its Q2 2026 call. In one month, Movida also reported that 85% of WhatsApp conversations were resolved entirely by AI. This is a single company’s self-reported result, shared by Meta, so treat it as an example of what’s possible rather than a typical outcome.

WhatsApp campaign benchmarks: open, click, and opt-out rates

Meta doesn’t publish average open or click rates for WhatsApp campaigns. The most transparent benchmark we found comes from Chatarmin, a WhatsApp marketing platform, which published data from its own e-commerce customers along with its method.

← Swipe to see full table →
Metric Figure How it's measured
Open rate (weighted average) 79.6% Messages read ÷ messages delivered
Open rate (median brand) 72.05% Per-brand median across 414 brands
Click rate 12.0% All link and button clicks ÷ messages delivered
Opt-out rate, campaigns 0.34% Opt-outs per delivered campaign message
Opt-out rate, automated flows 1.13% Unsubscribes per contact entering a flow

About this data: the sample is 382 brands that sent campaigns on Chatarmin, covering 49.3 million campaign messages between June 2025 and June 2026. Open, click, and opt-out rates are based on 11.8 million messages delivered between March 15 and the end of May 2026. Chatarmin says the sample isn’t representative of e-commerce as a whole, and it doesn’t say which countries the brands are in.

What it tells you: Most WhatsApp campaign messages do get read, but nowhere near the 98% you’ll see quoted elsewhere. A realistic target is somewhere in the 70s, and your results will depend on your list, your timing, and how relevant the message is.

WhatsApp pricing and limits by the numbers

These aren’t survey results. They’re the rules every business on the WhatsApp Business Platform works within, taken straight from Meta’s documentation.

10. Meta has charged per delivered message since July 1, 2025, replacing the older per-conversation model. The price depends on the message category and the customer’s country (Meta).

11. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges for replies too. Service messages (replies inside the 24-hour customer service window) and utility messages sent in that window are now charged per message. Service messages hadn’t been charged since November 1, 2024 (Meta).

12. Meta Business Agent costs $2.00 per 1 million tokens, which Meta estimates works out to about 4–5 cents per message. A simple question answered in four messages costs roughly 16–20 cents, by Meta’s own example (Meta).

13. Messages sent within 72 hours of a click-to-WhatsApp ad are free to deliver. Meta calls this the free entry point window. Meta Business Agent messages are still charged for tokens during it (Meta).

14. New businesses can message 250 people in a rolling 24-hour period. The limit then rises to 2,000, 10,000, 100,000, and finally unlimited. Getting to 2,000 takes business verification, or 2,000 delivered messages in 30 days with good-quality templates. After that, Meta raises the limit automatically once a business uses at least half of it over 7 days with high-quality messages (Meta).

For what these rules mean in practice, see our guide to sending automated WhatsApp messages.

WhatsApp statistics you’ll see everywhere but can’t verify

These numbers appear on dozens of WhatsApp statistics pages, but we couldn’t trace any of them to a published study with a method.

That matters for two reasons. If you plan a campaign around them, you’ll set targets your results can’t meet. And if you quote them in your own content, you’re repeating a claim nobody can back up. Here’s what we found when we went looking for each one.

“WhatsApp messages have a 98% open rate.” This is the most quoted WhatsApp statistic of all, usually with no source, or with a link to another blog that also has no source. The Chatarmin benchmark calls it “folklore” and found that no account in its sample reached 98% as a campaign average. Its measured average was 79.6%.

“WhatsApp has a 45–60% click-through rate.” Usually quoted next to the 98% figure, and just as hard to trace. The only published benchmark we found measured 12% clicks per delivered message.

“80% of WhatsApp messages are read within five minutes.” Often credited to Mobilesquared research. We couldn’t find the original study, its sample, or its date.

“175 million people message a WhatsApp business account every day.” Usually credited to Meta, but we couldn’t find it in Meta’s published announcements or earnings calls. Meta’s own numbers are different: 1 billion people messaging a business each week in May 2022, and more than 1 billion active business threads a day in October 2025.

If you’ve seen the original source for any of these, we’d like to hear from you, and we’ll update this page.

What these statistics mean for your business

Put the verified numbers together and a few things are clear.

Customers want to message you, and it affects whether they buy. Around three in four people prefer messaging a business, trust it more when they can, and are more likely to buy from it. A slow or missing reply on WhatsApp can cost you a sale, not just a support ticket.

Businesses are paying for WhatsApp, and that’s growing fast. Click-to-WhatsApp ad revenue grew 60% in a year, and Meta’s WhatsApp-driven revenue passed $1 billion a quarter. More businesses are investing in the channel every quarter.

Every message now has a price. Since October 2026, replies cost money too. That makes slow, unhelpful, or unnecessary messages more expensive than before, and fast, useful ones more valuable.

AI is becoming the default first reply. More than a million businesses use Meta’s own agent, and two in three consumers say an AI reply is helpful. The question for most businesses is no longer whether to use AI, but how to make it answer well and hand off to a person at the right time.

That’s what Heyy is built for. Its AI Employees answer customers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and your website, qualify leads, and pass conversations to your team in a shared inbox when a person is needed. To see how it fits together, start with our guide to WhatsApp automation.
