Best Intercom Alternatives 2026

October 30, 2026

SUMMARY
Intercom’s bill grows with every seat and every AI answer. We compared 10 alternatives on what the same team would pay each month, scored them on the same five criteria, and covered when it’s worth staying put.

Your Intercom bill went up again. You added two teammates, so that’s two more seats. Fin answered more questions this month, which sounds like good news until you see each answer billed at $0.99. And now you want to support customers on WhatsApp, which comes with additional charges.

None of that makes Intercom a bad product. Its pricing just grows in three directions at once, and for a lot of growing teams, the bill grows faster than the business.

That said, most lists of Intercom alternatives only compare starting prices, which tells you very little. So we took one realistic team and worked out what it would pay on Intercom and on 10 alternatives, AI included.

We also scored every tool on the same five criteria, and we’re upfront about when you’re better off staying on Intercom.

Prices checked in October 2026 on each vendor’s own pricing page.

The best Intercom alternatives at a glance

Quick answer: If you want AI, WhatsApp, and a shared inbox in one price, Heyy costs the least for the same setup. Help Scout and Crisp are strong picks for simpler support, and Zendesk leads for large teams that need enterprise ticketing.

The monthly cost below is for the same example team on every tool: 5 people answering chats, about 500 conversations a month fully handled by AI, on website chat and WhatsApp. Meta’s own WhatsApp message fees apply on every tool, so they’re left out.

Tool Best for Monthly cost for the example team AI included in the plan? Our score
Heyy Our pick AI, WhatsApp, and a shared inbox in one plan $149 Yes 4.7/5
Help Scout Simple, email-first support About $500 No, $0.75 per resolution 4.0/5
Crisp Small teams on a flat budget $95 to $295 Yes, with limits 4.0/5
respond.io Omnichannel teams with lots of contacts $159 Yes, from Growth 4.0/5
Chatbase An AI agent first, inbox second $400 Yes, credit-based 3.9/5
Freshdesk Omni Teams that want a familiar helpdesk From $145 500 AI sessions included 3.8/5
Tidio Small online stores From $49.17 plus Lyro AI No, Lyro is extra 3.6/5
Gorgias Shopify stores About $550 to $610 No, AI Agent is an add-on 3.6/5
Zendesk Large teams that need enterprise ticketing About $990 to $1,225 Partly, 5 resolutions per agent 3.6/5
LiveChat Teams that want a polished chat window About $590 Partly, 10 resolutions 3.4/5
Intercom (for comparison) In-app messaging for software companies $640 (Essential) to $920 (Advanced) No, $0.99 per outcome —

We picked a 5-person team because that’s where per-seat pricing starts to add up. If your team is smaller or larger, our live chat pricing guide shows how to work out the cost for your own size. We also explain how we worked out every number in “Same team, real costs” further down.

‍

Why teams look for Intercom alternatives

For a lot of teams, the problem isn’t what Intercom does but how the bill adds up. According to Intercom’s own pricing guide, you pay three ways at once: per seat, per AI answer, and per message on some channels.

  • Seats. Essential is $29 per seat a month on annual billing ($39 monthly), Advanced is $85 ($99), and Expert is $132 ($139). Every teammate who replies to customers needs one.
  • AI outcomes. Fin, Intercom’s AI agent, costs $0.99 for each conversation it resolves, on every plan.
  • Channels. WhatsApp is charged per conversation and SMS per message, at rates that vary by volume and region. They’re on top of everything else.

Here’s what that looks like for our example team: 5 people answering chats, with about 500 conversations a month resolved by Fin.

Essential Advanced
5 seats (annual billing) $145 $425
500 Fin outcomes at $0.99 $495 $495
Total per month $640 $920
Plus WhatsApp and SMS charges WhatsApp and SMS charges

The AI is the part that catches people out. At 500 resolved conversations a month, Fin costs more than the seats on Essential. And the better it works, the more you pay. That’s fine if you budget for it, but many teams find it hard to predict from one month to the next.

The other common reasons teams switch are simpler: they don’t use Intercom’s in-app product tours and messaging, so they’re paying for features built for software companies, or they want WhatsApp and Instagram in the same inbox without extra charges.

‍

How we scored the alternatives

Every tool is scored out of 5 on the same five criteria. These are the things that decide whether a switch actually saves you money and effort, so they matter more than feature counts.

Criterion What we looked at
AI included Is an AI agent part of the plan, or an add-on charged per answer?
Channels Website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and SMS: which are available, and on which plans?
Team inbox Can a team share conversations, assign them, and hand chats from AI to a person?
Predictable pricing Can you work out next month’s bill before it arrives?
Ease of setup How quickly can a small team get it live without a developer?

The overall score is the average of the five. We worked out pricing from each vendor’s pricing page in October 2026. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a price, we say so instead of guessing.

The 10 best Intercom alternatives in 2026

1. Heyy

Score: 4.7/5 (AI 5 · Channels 5 · Team inbox 4.5 · Pricing 4.5 · Setup 4.5)

Best for: teams that want AI, WhatsApp, and a shared inbox in one plan

Heyy puts an AI Employee in front of your customers on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and SMS, and hands conversations to your team in one shared inbox when a person needs to step in.

Instead of charging per seat and again for every AI answer, each plan includes your users, your channels, and a monthly allowance of AI credits. Campaigns, automations, and a mini-CRM come in the same plan, so you’re not buying them separately.

  • Pricing: Hobby $49/month (1 user, 1 AI Employee, 1,000 credits). Pro $149/month (5 users, 2 AI Employees, 6,000 credits). Ultra $499/month (10 users). Extra credits are $20 per 1,000. 7-day free trial.
  • Example team: $149/month on Pro. 500 AI-handled chats use about 2,000 credits, well inside the 6,000 included.
  • Strengths: AI included from the first paid plan; every major messaging channel in one inbox; predictable monthly cost.
  • Watch out for: There's no free plan, only a 7-day trial, so you’ll need a paid plan to keep going.

2. Help Scout

Score: 4.0/5 (AI 3.5 · Channels 4 · Team inbox 4.5 · Pricing 3.5 · Setup 4.5)

Best for: small teams that do most of their support over email

Help Scout is a calm, easy-to-use shared inbox with a help center and live chat built in. Its AI charges only when it actually resolves a conversation, and new accounts get three months of unlimited AI resolutions free.

  • Pricing: Standard $25, Plus $45, and Pro $75 per user a month. AI resolutions cost $0.75 each, with an optional monthly spending cap. Free plan for up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month.
  • Example team: about $500/month ($125 for 5 Standard users plus $375 for 500 AI resolutions).
  • Strengths: very quick to set up; WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and SMS listed on paid plans; a cheaper per-resolution rate than Intercom.
  • Watch out for: AI is still charged per resolution, so costs rise with volume.

3. Crisp

Score: 4.0/5 (AI 4 · Channels 4 · Team inbox 4 · Pricing 4 · Setup 4)

Best for: small teams that want a flat monthly price

Crisp charges per workspace, not per seat, and includes an AI allowance on its paid plans. It’s a solid all-rounder for small teams that want chat, a shared inbox, and messaging channels without per-seat maths.

  • Pricing: Free (2 seats), Mini $45/month, Essentials $95/month, Plus $295/month. Instagram and WhatsApp start on Essentials.
  • Example team: $95 to $295/month. Essentials includes about 450 AI-handled conversations, so 500 means a top-up (price not listed) or moving to Plus, which includes about 1,350.
  • Strengths: flat pricing; AI included; a free plan to start.
  • Watch out for: WhatsApp and Instagram need Essentials or above.

4. respond.io

Score: 4.0/5 (AI 4 · Channels 5 · Team inbox 4.5 · Pricing 3.5 · Setup 3)

Best for: larger B2C teams handling lots of contacts across many channels

respond.io brings WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, website chat, and more into one workspace, with workflows and AI Agents for routing and replies. It’s built for mid-market teams, so it’s powerful, but it takes more setting up than most tools here.

  • Pricing: Starter $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly) with 5 users and 5,000 AI credits. Growth $159/month yearly ($199 monthly) with 10 users, 10,000 AI credits, and AI Agents, for up to 1,000 monthly active contacts.
  • Example team: $159/month on Growth, if you stay under 1,000 monthly active contacts.
  • Strengths: very wide channel coverage; strong workflows.
  • Watch out for: pricing is tied to monthly active contacts, so a busy month can push you up a tier; AI Agents start on Growth, not Starter.

5. Chatbase

Score: 3.9/5 (AI 5 · Channels 3.5 · Team inbox 3 · Pricing 3.5 · Setup 4.5)

Best for: teams whose priority is the AI agent itself

Chatbase is AI-first: you train an agent on your content and put it on your website and messaging channels in minutes. Its team inbox for human replies is newer and starts on its mid-tier plan.

  • Pricing: Hobby $32/month (2 members, 700 credits), Standard $120/month (3 members, 4,000 credits, helpdesk inbox), Pro $400/month (5 members), billed yearly. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000.
  • Example team: $400/month on Pro, since you need 5 members.
  • Strengths: excellent AI agent; fast to set up.
  • Watch out for: campaigns, helpdesk, and some integrations sit on higher plans, so the full setup costs more than the entry price suggests.

6. Freshdesk Omni

Score: 3.8/5 (AI 4 · Channels 3.5 · Team inbox 4.5 · Pricing 3.5 · Setup 3.5)

Best for: teams that want a traditional helpdesk with chat built in

Freshdesk Omni combines ticketing, chat, and Freshworks’ Freddy AI in one product. Every plan includes 500 AI agent sessions a month, which is generous at this price.

  • Pricing: Growth $29, Pro $79, and Enterprise $119 per agent a month, billed annually. 500 AI sessions included; extra sessions are $49 per 100. Copilot is $29 per agent on Pro and above. 14-day free trial.
  • Example team: from $145/month (5 agents on Growth), plus $49 for every 100 AI sessions over 500.
  • Strengths: mature ticketing; a real AI allowance included.
  • Watch out for: the pricing page doesn’t list which messaging channels each plan includes, so check WhatsApp and Instagram with sales.

7. Tidio

Score: 3.6/5 (AI 3 · Channels 4 · Team inbox 3.5 · Pricing 3 · Setup 4.5)

Best for: small online stores getting started with chat

Tidio is easy to install and popular with small ecommerce stores, with Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp on every plan. Its AI agent, Lyro, is priced separately by the number of AI conversations.

  • Pricing: Free plan (50 conversations), Starter $24.17/month, Growth from $49.17/month, billed annually. Lyro from $32.50/month for 50 AI conversations.
  • Example team: from $49.17/month plus Lyro. Tidio doesn’t publish the Lyro price for 500 conversations, so we couldn’t total it.
  • Strengths: quick setup; social channels on every plan.
  • Watch out for: plans cap conversations, and AI costs scale separately.

8. Gorgias

Score: 3.6/5 (AI 3 · Channels 3.5 · Team inbox 4.5 · Pricing 3 · Setup 4)

Best for: Shopify stores with a dedicated support team

Gorgias is a helpdesk built for ecommerce, priced by ticket volume rather than seats. Its AI Agent is an add-on, and conversations it resolves on its own don’t count toward your ticket allowance.

  • Pricing: Starter $10/month (50 tickets, 3 seats), Basic $60 (300 tickets, 3 seats), Pro $360 (2,000 tickets, unlimited agents), Advanced $900 (5,000 tickets), billed monthly. Annual billing saves up to 17%. AI Agent from $250/month.
  • Example team: about $550 to $610/month (Pro, since Basic only has 3 seats, plus AI Agent).
  • Strengths: deep ecommerce focus; unlimited agents from Pro.
  • Watch out for: WhatsApp isn’t mentioned in the plan details, and SMS and voice are reserved for higher tiers or add-ons.

9. Zendesk

Score: 3.6/5 (AI 3 · Channels 4.5 · Team inbox 5 · Pricing 2.5 · Setup 3)

Best for: large support teams that need enterprise ticketing

Zendesk is the most complete helpdesk on this list, with ticketing, routing, reporting, and messaging across every major channel. That depth comes with per-agent pricing and AI charged per resolution once you pass a small allowance.

  • Pricing: Suite Team $55 per agent a month annually ($69 monthly). 5 automated resolutions per agent included; extra resolutions $1.50 to $2 each. Copilot is a $50 add-on.
  • Example team: about $990 to $1,225/month ($275 for seats, plus 475 extra resolutions).
  • Strengths: enterprise-grade ticketing and reporting; WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger on Suite plans.
  • Watch out for: the most expensive option here for an AI-heavy team, and it takes time to set up well.

10. LiveChat

Score: 3.4/5 (AI 2.5 · Channels 3 · Team inbox 4 · Pricing 3 · Setup 4.5)

Best for: teams that mainly need a polished website chat window

LiveChat does website chat very well and is quick to install, with Messenger included on every plan. AI resolutions are limited on the base plan, and extra ones are sold in packs.

  • Pricing: From $19 per agent a month, billed annually. 10 AI resolutions included; extras are $49.50 per 50.
  • Example team: about $590/month ($95 for 5 agents, plus about 490 extra resolutions).
  • Strengths: a refined chat experience; fast setup.
  • Watch out for: WhatsApp and Instagram aren’t clearly listed on the pricing page, and AI gets expensive at volume.
    ‍

Intercom alternatives pricing: what a 5-person team actually pays

Starting prices don’t tell you much, because every tool charges for different things: some per seat, some per AI answer, some per plan. So we priced the same team on every tool, to show what you’d really pay each month.

The example team: 5 people answering chats, about 500 conversations a month fully handled by AI, on website chat and WhatsApp. We used annual billing where it’s offered and the cheapest plan that covers the team. Meta’s WhatsApp message fees apply on every tool, so they’re left out.

Tool Plan Seats AI for 500 conversations Monthly total
Heyy Pro Included (5 users) Included (about 2,000 of 6,000 credits) $149
Freshdesk Omni Growth $145 Included (500 sessions) From $145
respond.io Growth Included (10 users) Included (10,000 AI credits) $159
Crisp Essentials or Plus Included Included up to about 450, or Plus $95 to $295
Chatbase Pro Included (5 members) Credit-based $400
Help Scout Standard $125 $375 About $500
Gorgias Pro Included (unlimited) AI Agent from $250 About $550 to $610
LiveChat Entry plan $95 About $495 (10 included, then packs of 50) About $590
Intercom Essential $145 $495 $640
Intercom Advanced $425 $495 $920
Zendesk Suite Team $275 $712 to $950 (25 included, then $1.50 to $2 each) About $990 to $1,225
Tidio Growth Included Lyro, price for 500 not published From $49.17 plus Lyro

‍

A few notes on how we got there:

  • Heyy: we assumed each AI-handled chat uses about 4 credits (1 to start the automation and about 3 AI replies). Extra credits are $20 per 1,000 if you go over.
  • Freshdesk: assumes each AI-handled chat is one AI session. Every extra 100 sessions adds $49.
  • respond.io: assumes fewer than 1,000 monthly active contacts. Above that, the price goes up.
  • Gorgias: Pro is $360 billed monthly, or about $300 with the annual discount. Basic is cheaper but only has 3 seats.
  • Intercom and Zendesk: AI is charged per resolution, so these totals rise with every extra conversation the AI resolves.

The pattern is clear. Tools that include AI in the plan, like Heyy, Freshdesk, and respond.io, stay close to their list price. Tools that charge per AI resolution end up costing several times more than their seats.
‍

When to stay on Intercom

Switching isn’t always the right call. Intercom is still the better choice if:

  • You’re a software company that relies on in-app messaging. Product tours, in-app banners, and messages inside your product are where Intercom is strongest. Most alternatives here focus on customer conversations, not product onboarding.
  • Fin resolves only a small number of conversations. At 50 resolutions a month, Fin costs about $50. The per-resolution model only hurts when volume is high.
  • Your workflows are deeply built into Intercom. If you’ve spent months on custom bots, integrations, and reports, rebuilding them may cost more than you’d save, at least for now.

If none of those apply, and your bill keeps climbing with seats and AI, match what you actually need to the right tool:

If you… Look at
Want AI, WhatsApp, Instagram, and a shared inbox in one predictable price Heyy
Mostly answer emails and want something simple Help Scout
Are a small team that wants a flat monthly price Crisp
Handle a large volume of contacts across many messaging apps respond.io
Care most about the AI agent itself Chatbase
Want a traditional helpdesk with an AI allowance included Freshdesk Omni
Run a small online store and want to start cheap Tidio
Run a Shopify store with a dedicated support team Gorgias
Need enterprise ticketing, routing, and reporting Zendesk
Mainly need a polished website chat window LiveChat
Rely on in-app product tours and messaging Stay on Intercom

Before you commit, run the numbers for your own team: how many people answer chats, how many conversations AI could handle, and which channels your customers use. Our guide to live chat software pricing walks you through it.

Intercom alternatives FAQs

1. What’s the cheapest Intercom alternative?

It depends on what you need. For a team that wants AI and WhatsApp included, Heyy, Freshdesk Omni, and respond.io came out cheapest in our example, at around $145 to $160 a month for 5 people and 500 AI-handled conversations. If you don’t need AI, free plans from Crisp, Tidio, and Help Scout cost nothing to start.

2. Is there a free alternative to Intercom?

Yes. Crisp, Tidio, and Help Scout all have free plans, with limits on seats, conversations, or features. Most don’t include AI on the free plan.

3. Which Intercom alternative has the best AI?

Chatbase is the most AI-focused tool here. Heyy includes an AI Employee in every paid plan, alongside a shared inbox and messaging channels. The right choice depends on whether you need just an AI agent or the whole system around it.

4. How much does Intercom cost in 2026?

Intercom charges $29, $85, or $132 per seat a month on annual billing ($39, $99, or $139 monthly), plus $0.99 for each conversation Fin resolves. WhatsApp and SMS are charged on top.

5. Can I move my data out of Intercom?

Yes. You can export your contacts and conversation history before you cancel. Do this first, and copy your help articles across, so your new AI has something to learn from.

‍

Pay for the outcome you need, not the pricing model

Intercom is built for software companies that live inside their product. If that’s you, it’s hard to beat. If you mainly need to answer customers quickly across chat and messaging apps, you’re likely paying for features you don’t use, plus a bill that grows every time your AI does its job.

With Heyy, your plan covers your team, your channels, and an AI Employee that hands chats to a person when it should. Try Heyy free for 7 days and run your own numbers against your current Intercom bill.
